Nikko World Heritage
nikko

nikkoIt is said that if you have never been to Nikko then you don't know the true meaning of magnificent. Nikko designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site is one of Japan’s most beautiful regions. The shrines and temples of Nikko, together with their natural surroundings, have for centuries been a sacred site known for its architectural and decorative masterpieces. They are closely associated with the history of the Tokugawa Shoguns.

This full day tour starts with a visit to the Lake Chuzenji. 5-storyPart of the Nikko National Park, the beautiful Lake Chuzenji with forested shores was formed by lava flows of the now extinct volcano several thousand years ago, it is now located at the foot of the sacred Nantai Volcano.
Next we visit the famous Nikko Toshogu Shrine, dedicated to the first shogun of the Tokugawa era and famous for its carving of the “hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil” monkeys. They're part of a curious series of carvings about the life cycle of a monkey, from giddy childhood to fearful old age. Nearby, you can also find an interesting approximation of an elephant, carved by an artist who had clearly never seen one. The lavishly decorated shrine complex consists of more than a dozen Shinto and Buddhist buildings set in a beautiful forest spectacular complex. There is little doubt that the aphorism refers to the stunning Toshugu Shrine, but Nikko is also an area of extraordinary natural beauty that should be visited at least once while traveling in Japan.
